Hello Kitty – one of the world’s most recognizable cats, is featured on almost any kind of merchandise you can think of. Toys, clothes, shoes, home décor and luggage. The range of Hello Kitty luggage for example, is a large one. And it is not just little girls who like to take Hello Kitty along when they travel.
Who is Hello Kitty?
Hello Kitty made her debut on an early forerunner of Hello Kitty luggage. The Japanese bobcat (for that is what she is) first appeared on a line of small plastic coin purses in Japan in 1974. She made her US debut 2 years later.
The cat who appears on Hello Kitty luggage sets actually does, according to her “official bio” have a name – Kitty White. She is also not actually Japanese. She apparently comes form London, England.
She has a twin sister called Mimi ( a Hello Kitty imposter?) and is 5 apples tall and 3 apples wide, which is certainly an interesting way for a fashion icon to describe her personal measurements.
Hello Kitty was created by Yuko Shimizu, a Japanese designer who has also created characters called Angel Cat Sugar and Rebecca Bonbon but spends a great deal of her time these days talking to fans at comic conventions about her famous creation, as Hello Kitty has achieved a sort of cult like status amongst that community.
