Make Your Own Personalized Luggage Tags

It s harder than ever to get in and out of an airport efficiently these days. Being unable to recognize your bags in amongst of sea of others only serves to slow you down even further. If the though of investing in day glo luggage just so you can spot it easily does not appeal making your own personalized luggage tags might. It is not hard to do and the end result is bag identification that will have your luggage standing out from the crowd as soon as it hits the carousel, easy to spot the first time it sails past you, not the fifth.. Here’s how its done:

To make your personalized luggage tags you will need:

Printed fabric scraps (choose distinctive fabrics, anything goes but the easier to notice the better)
Fusible interfacing
Clear vinyl
Coordinating ribbon
Sewing machine
Thread
Iron
Ironing board
Pins

To begin with cut two 3 1/2-by-5-inch rectangles out of the fabric scraps, and then do the same with the fusible interfacing. You then need to cut a piece of vinyl that measures 2 1/2 by 3 inches. Once you are done put them all aside for use later.

The next step is to take your ribbon, cut a 6 inch length and fold it in half lengthways. Press the folded ribbon with a hot iron to seal the “seam” in place.

Next, carefully bond the fusible interfacing to the wrong side of one of your printed fabric rectangles, making sure you are following the manufacturers instructions as they do differ slightly from brand to brand.

Next, place the fabric rectangles right sides together and sandwich the vinyl between the two. You will notice of course that the vinyl is smaller but that is so those all important contact details can be added when your customized luggage tags are finished. In order for your personalized luggage tags to look right you need to make sure that three out of the four edges of the vinyl piece line up nicely with the edges of the fabric rectangles.

Now you take the ribbon length and tuck it carefully between the layers, making sure it is located at the end of the luggage tag that will not have the vinyl sewn into it. When this is done you should pin it all together and then sew it up making sure that you leave a small opening so that you will be able to turn the fabric. Once you have turned the fabric right side out finish off the sewing portion of your personalized luggage tags project by top stitching the small opening closed.

The last step is to type, print or hand write your contact details on a piece of cardboard and slide into your new personalized luggage tags, making sure it can be clearly seen.
